Workforce Readiness

Interested in working with youth and giving back to the community? There are a variety of volunteer opportunities that are available throughout the year in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan areas. We are continuing to develop our partnerships with local area schools and we are committed to growing our partnership with the Portland Human Resource Management Association (PHRMA). We are constantly adding to our list of volunteers and would like to encourage you to join our growing team of HR Professionals working to prepare both our current and our future workforce to meet the changing needs in our global economy.

How to get involved?

  1. Decide what type of workforce readiness activity you would enjoy doing. Some areas where students and faculty have requested training from HR professionals are:
    • Building a Resume
    • Writing a cover letter
    • Providing References
    • Conducting a Job Search
    • One-On-One Coaching with all of these job search functions
    • How to Market Yourself to Employers
    • Mock Interviews
    • Company Site Tours
  2. Decide how much time you can realistically commit. Some activities require only a few hours of your time, some are half day or one day events, and others may require an ongoing commitment.
  3. View the volunteer opportunities posted on this website under the Volunteer Opportunities tab to see current activities.
  4. Contact your chapter Workforce Readiness Director, Becky Whitten, to volunteer for opportunities or to submit ideas or opportunities. Her email is: BWhitten@tidland.com and her phone number is: (360) 834-2345 x 445.

Some workforce readiness events already established are:

  • Annual Mock Interviews conducted at Washougal High School - Washougal, WA
  • Annual Mock Interviews conducted at Camas High School - Camas, WA
  • Mock Interviews at other educational institutions in the Vancouver/Portland areas.
  • New Avenues For Youth (a non-profit assisting homeless and street youth)–Portland, OR
  • Annual Northwest Youth Careers Expo - The largest career fair in the region with over 4,500 high school age students attending each year.
  • Mock interviews with adults re-entering the workforce at WorkSource Vancouver.
